Senegal adopts a new Code of Military Discipline

Senegal's 20,000 strong armed forces and gendarmerie adopt a new Code of Military Discipline. Military tribunals per se are now a thing of the past. Senegal's military elite has  recently gathered to be briefed on the new legislation which introduces much stiffer penalties for offences such as 'desertion' which is now punishable by a term of imprisonment varying from 6 months to 3 years in peacetime and up to 10 years in wartime.  If the offender is an officer, the court may also sentence him to dismissal.
